This 2006 Porsche Boxster arrived at JZM Porsche to have a noise investigated. A quick listen had us rushing to turn off the engine, as it was obviously a failing intermediate shaft bearing.
Upon removing the transmission, the scene showed we had acted not a moment too soon, as the bearing was already collapsed and ball bearings were flying everywhere. The job now is to replace the part and ensure the car is ready for more reliable future miles.
Common to Porsche 996, 997 and Boxster engines, the problem usually occurs when engine oil gets past the intermediate shaft bearing seals, destroying the bearing grease and replacing it with lighter grade used engine oil. Starved of proper lubrication and now with added engine dirt, the bearing fails, breaks up in the engine and usually takes the engine with it. This then means a full engine rebuild.
